Christmas Eve Suicide Shocks Oregon Town

John Taylor aged about 21 ended his life with a revolver on Christmas Eve after a rebuke from his mother for drinking. He died about eight o’clock the next morning after fourteen hours of agony. Witnesses cited possible love affair as a motive, though no definite cause was found. Funeral services were held at Oddfellows Hall and the burial was in the I O O F cemetery.

BICE CUTS DOWN OLD OAK NEAR NELSON PLACE

Bice temporarily abandoned his vocation to fell a massive oak in the city’s south west, aided by ropes and pulleys. The tree, about four feet thick at the base, may yield five cords of wood. Clyde E. B. Carlos estimates the age at 258 years based on rings. The tree is among Oregon’s oldest, recalling the plane era in this region.
