A hand car carrying M. Manston and three laborers including F. Fukuda was struck by an engine in dense fog near Mola, north of Independence. Fukuda died instantly. the accident, blamed on poor visibility and slippery track, prompted an investigation led by WW McElmurry and coroner Chapman.
J B Parker of Orville said roads are poor and will likely stay so for another month unless there is improvement. Rural service was briefly abandoned between Independence and Salem, and Pomona could not reach Corvallis Saturday due to dense fog covering the river, forcing a layup below Independence until daylight Sunday.
War week efforts in the city aimed to sell stock in the Derry fruit ranch with limited local enthusiasm. Prof. Peck of the O. A. C. assists the high school athletic department while events at the bazaar draw attention. Miss Kora Browne plans Albany visits Saturday and Sunday.
Salem officials and researchers toured Polk county schools on a credit work mission led by Dr Buttrick from Rockefeller Institute and MH Seymour. A moving picture fire scare at a Polk County show ended when operator Ray Luce hurled a burning film out a window, narrowly preventing a blaze in the theater complex.
J D Hibte & Company to vacate the old Monmouth Street warehouse within 30 days to clear space for a rebuilt Hibte premises with greater capacity. The Masonic lodge will join walls with Nelson & Henkle and begin work on a new playhouse early next year, improving Main Street’s south end. Post Office box rents to rise from January 1 1913 due to higher office patronage. Independence may gain free delivery.
The Enterprise publishes a corrected statement for Farmers State Bank showing individual deposits at 65,000 dollars, not 25,000 as previously reported. The bank, established just over six months ago, shows a strong quarterly gain reflecting a solid start.
An old ad touts Dr King’s New Life Pills claiming to cleanse stomach and bowels, soothe distress, and restore health. It promotes gentle action by liver and bowels and cites a 25 cent price at druggists.
A birthday dinner was hosted at Mrs. Susan Jones's home on Wednesday to celebrate her seventy second anniversary. The reunion brought together a large number of relatives, with all children present except two daughters.

Independence National Bank plans a westward building on Moonmouth Street to house McBeth and Wiltshire Plumbers. Miller and Konine, cabinet makers in the Garege building, will expand after steady patronage. Mrs. M. W. Wallace clears Winter Millinery and plans store closure after year start. G. P. Graham of Newberg visited son L. L. Graham near the post office and may relocate to Independence.
Hon F A Patterson returns after a visit. L Claggett builds a shipping house and Vanduyn Smith warehouse on the river bank. A new shingle mill will soon operate producing thousands of shingles. Bell of Corvallis preaches at M E church. Public school seats ordered from Portland for comfort. Christian church buys lot at Third and 10 streets for a new building when funds allow. A small steam launch near Dotty's sew nir at C street attracts local interest.
Railroad officials and local agents outline improved service conditions at Monmouth and promise relief measures to residents and businesses affected by recent disruptions.

At age 75 M A Baker, a former soldier, presented an eccentric exhibition from the Solders’ Home in California. He displayed his own invented elycalypus party and carried home several curios, turning idle hours into a fruitful and cheerful trip to the south.
Independence High School defeated Mt Angel Athletic Club 30 to 17 in a Saturday night basketball game at the local gym. The Independence team led from the outset and maintained control throughout, outplaying their opponents and securing the win. Separately, C. L. Fitelard bought 87 bales of hops from Welker Brothers at 14 cents per pound and 62 bales from Peter Heater. the Walker lot's hops were described as the largest unsold lot in the area at that time.
An old print advert promotes Bucklen Arnica Salve claiming it cures skin eruptions and sores and keeps faces clear. It touts equal effectiveness for eczema piles and bruises and sells for 25 cents at druggists. An Independence National Bank notice follows about its annual shareholders meeting set for January 14, 1915.
J. L. Hanna J. G. McIntosh and A. Whitney traveled to Salem on Tuesday to attend a session discussing the potential deeper Willamette River project and its implications.
Notice is given that the stockholders meeting of the Independence and Monmouth Railway Company will be at Independence National Bank in Independence Oregon on December 28 1912 at 10 o clock a m to elect officers for the ensuing year and transact other business as may come before the meeting.
