Hop picking begins as harvest season starts in Abia with crowds from across the country arriving in yards. Pickers rush in to beat weather and mold concerns, despite a rain setback, as hotels fill and crews mobilize for a busy season. The largest arrivals arrived Thursday with trains from Portland bringing workers to Independence.
Wellington Fuller two year old son of Mr and Mrs Ed Fuller died Sunday evening after days of critical illness. Funeral was held at 3 PM Monday at home, Rev PF N Sandifur of the M B church officiating, burial in the local O F cemetery. This marks the fifth child lost by the family, drawing community sympathy.
The launch Independence under Captain Claude Skinner will operate the Louise between here and Salem during hoppicking season. The first trip occurred Monday, with Captain J. D. Mitchell of Portland in charge aboard Independence. The schedule: depart in the morning for Salem, extend to Hall's Perry, return to Salem, then back to Independence in the evening, carrying passengers, freight, and express.
Mrs. B. F. Whiteaker and family express heartfelt thanks for kindness and sympathy shown by friends and neighbors during their recent bereavement.
L A Cramer of the Oregon Electric Railway Co and M Cunningham of Portland visited the city to estimate costs for a hoist at the East Independence dock to handle freight and express business. The plan envisions an electric hoist and an express office, with no immediate railroad expansion into Independence.
The Enter prise prints 35 000 hop checks for grower C A Mc Loughlin at H Hirach berg ranch north of the city. The region's hop harvesters total at least 10 000, earning about 1.00 per day, with a projected five to six week payroll surpassing any state town except possibly Portland.
C R Blue has optioned Mrs Jaspersons corner Monmouth Reid Railroad streets lots and plans a three story building soon. At least one room will house a theatre company. Bise leads the undertaking with others to finance and stockholders expect a modern building in every respect.
Rural letter carriers association to meet in Dallas on Sunday and Monday with Polk county hosting the state event. Committee members include P. J. Dickinson and Parker of Independence. Over 100 carriers expected from a 166 member state group to discuss service improvements including good roads.
The home of John F. Robbins four and one half miles north of Independence on the Salem roads was robbed Monday afternoon while the family was away. Mrs. Robbins’s gold watch and chain were the most valuable missing item, with other smaller losses. Local speculation points to highwaymen as the likely culprits.
RB F Swope attorney for C W Irving has begun action in department 2 Polk County district court against Mrs Lulu Dornsife and Van Dornsife to secure payment of a mortgage and note. He seeks judgment for 478 dollars plus interest and attorneys fees.
G Love was away from Tangent for part of the week, missing usual duties and returning later with no further detail on the absence.
The Independence School Board led by Chairman C. D. Calbreath plans a progressive year with upgraded facilities, a new military training track, expanded domestic science, a science laboratory, and stronger physical education. The board praises faculty selection and urges community backing for a strong public school system.
In early September Independence welcomes Wetherbee and Jones moving to a Main street building by H Hirschberg with a full dry goods stock. L A Carey from Spokane opens a Whiteaker Street shop. W W Gains opens a pool hall in the Asa Taylor building, a candy kitchen emerges in A Nelson’s former space, and C Holge of Serétié opens a restaurant at Independence Hotel. The city expands stores and stock ahead of fall trade.
Within sixty days cars will run on the new railroad extension from this city to the Wigwrich hop ranch in the American bottoms and toward Buena Vista in the near future. Mr. Hirschberg, president, has set a large workforce at the project with construction to finish in a few weeks. Delays arose from a survey change but right of way to Wigwrich ranch is secured and Buena Vista access will follow. Local farmers and Buena Vista residents have offered strong support since the Enterprise note.
Sunday School begins at 10 with classes for all. Preaching at 11 on A Christian In the Wrong Place. Epworth League at 7 with The Nobility of Youthful Enthusiasm. Evening service features a sermon on education by Prof. F. B. Franklin of Albany College at 8. Music good. cordial welcome. Minister F. N. Sandifur.
A statement credits leadership and supervision for guiding educational work and ensuring the success of the schools under his oversight.
Ben Whiteaker a Polk county pioneer died at his home near the city last Saturday after paralysis and a stroke. Born May 25 1835 in Illinois he came to Oregon in 1848. He was known as Uncle Ben and leaves a large family and a memory of a warm helping nature.
Cap Claude Skinner appears in Savannah on Tuesday in apparent incidents recorded by local observers. Police logs note the event as a public safety matter with no further details available in the fragment.
The Wednesday adjourned meeting approved the night watch clock removal and appointed J H Feagies as night watch, while voting to vacate Monmouth street east of Main. Land to Masonic lodge and Ross R Nelson may yield city funds, and pool hall licenses were issued amid disputes.
