Spring Injury to Fruit Trees Due to Nitrogen Hunger

Dr A B Cordley dean of agriculture and director of the experiment station argues acute nitrogen starvation during peak vegetative growth causes spring injury or sour sap in fruit trees. In humid Northwest orchards, cold wet spells after bloom worsen symptoms, including cambial discoloration, poor fruit set, leaf drop, and possible tree death. A light nitrate of soda spray about 10 days before blossoming may supply needed nitrates, while soil drainage and cover crops aid nitrification.

Professor Lawrence notes dense growth blocks flow by 40 to 60 percent in spring and early summer, causing crop losses and higher labor costs. He recommends five to seven days of water shutoff and the acme harrow tech to cut weeds two inches below canal bottoms, aided by current washing them out. Chemical controls to be tested, horned pondweed similar and also targeted.
