Death of Old Pioneer George W Whiteaker at Salem
George Washington Whiteaker, Oregon pioneer of 1848 and longtime Independence resident, died in Salem after medical treatment. Born July 21, 1843 in Illinois, he crossed to Oregon at age five and married Nancy Ann Osborne in Dallas in 1870. He left seven children and was remembered with a large church funeral at the Presbyterian church.

Miss Wellington died Friday April 16 at 1 00 pm in Independence after two years of declining health. She was 30 years 7 months 18 days and died of consumption. A faithful Methodist since age thirteen, she leaves her father, mother, a brother William L, and sister Mrs Ed Fuller. The funeral was held Saturday at 1 30 pm from the M E Church with Rev. Harry McCain officiating.
