Ossawatomie Sacked After Missouri Band Plunders Town
An 1856 attack at Ossawatomie saw Col Sumner’s troops confront a force including Buford’s Georgians and Missourians who sacked the defenceless town. Homes were pillaged, horses stolen, and even women’s personal items looted, with one U.S. mail coach seized between Westport and Fort Scott. Local leaders sought peaceable settlement while martial law loomed and calls for reinforcements grew.
