King George of Greece was shot dead in Salonica while in the street. The assassin, gun in hand, was captured and jailed after a mob incident. Constantine, eldest son, took the oath of office in Athens as the king’s body to be returned for interment.
Washington March 21 Secretary Lane of the Interior favors immediate railroad construction from tidewater to Alaska's interior after conferences with prominent Alaskans. He also discussed with Col Wilds P Richardson the need for greater road and trail appropriations.
Senator La Follette visited the White House for a long conference with President Wilson on national questions. The two men reportedly stand in complete harmony on most public policy issues. Washington March 21. The resignation of Fred Dennett as commissioner of the United States general land office has been accepted along with other staff changes.
Washington March 21 Senator Key Pitman of Nevada has been named chairman of the committee on territories. Pitman is a longtime Nome resident and a staunch Alaska ally in Congress, well acquainted with the territory’s needs.
Washington reports that Oscar W. Underwood chairman of the house ways and means committee appeals to the press and public to abstain from forming opinions on tariff changes until Congress has time to discuss the issue. He condemns hasty criticism of the large subject.
In Los Angeles on March 21 Clarence Darrow saw all motions to dismiss fail and the second trial is scheduled to begin March 31.
Humboldt Ta March 21 Champion Frank Gotech signs to wrestle George Lurch in Kansas City April 1. New York March 21 Bombardier Wells knocked out by Gunboat Smith in second round. Los Angeles March 21 Bud Anderson and Knockout Brown draw after 20 rounds with the gang saving Brown in the eleventh and Anderson in the last. They will meet again in a month.
Captain Gene Norton arrives from Ruby Monday while BIngels buys a half interest in a 1500 acre ranch likely in Eastern Washington. Dancan Michie expects to reach Iditarod on April 16 and notes a quiet coast while the north looks promising. Jesse Rogers gets a letter from Ed Donnelly about climbing a ten story building in New York City. Joe Mikuta, formerly with Cascade laundry, is cooking at Nolan in the Koyukuk and plans to stay.
Next Tuesday a public meeting will be held at A. B. Hall to discuss municipal matters and nominate seven men for the council for the ensuing year. The session opens promptly at 8:30 p.m. and all citizens are urged to attend.
Seattle reports the case against the Moore brothers has been dismissed. They faced charges of using the U S mails with intent to defraud.
Seattle report states George Haskins a Rampart Alaska pioneer has died. he was reputed wealthy.
Chief of Police Kohler known as Golden Rule Kohler has been dismissed on a charge of improper conduct in Cleveland.
William Jennings Bryan marked his 53rd birthday in Toncola Nebraska on March 16 with a large banquet hosted by admirers. After-dinner speeches praised the famed statesman as a peerless leader.
Tax delinquents must pay up the city’s due amount with three writs of execution served and property seized. The seized property will be advertised for ten days before sale. William Ansley, a Richmond street merchant, is a candidate for the city council of Iditarod.
Joe Jean departs for Ruby to race on April 2 in the Ruby Long City course from Ruby to Long City and back about 58 miles. The postponement moved from March 27 to permit Iditarod entry with dogs owned by Riley and Charley Renaud. Jean aims to win at least 1500 dollars and faces strong opposition from E Coke Hill.
Pete Jensen sold his Bear creek stake in the Upgrade association to Dave Stranberg on March 2 for 3250 dollars. Stranberg now holds 7.8 of the property, after previously buying 21-32 from Michie & Ingles for 2250 dollars. Kilroy had a conditional option earlier but waived it.
Former North Dakota Governor John Burke, born 1859, appointed United States Treasurer by President Wilson. Burke served two terms as governor and now holds the federal finance post.
Harry Donnelly received a wire from Howard H Porter announcing his safe arrival at Seward on the 18th evening. He left Iditarod March 1 but will wait until the 27th for a steamer. Dick Button and J W Kempf also arrived at Seward.

Juneau March 21 The Alaska legislature enacted woman suffrage the measure passed the house unanimously March 18 and is expected to be signed by Governor Clark making the law effective in 90 days Also approved were eight hour day proposals for miners and to remove a tax on Seward peninsula railroad funds. The session also advanced education and public holiday bills and memorials to Congress.
In Chicago Judge M. Landis hears the Alaska coalfields fraud case centered on dummy entries in papers covering the Matanuska fields. Witnesses say they expected rewards for signing papers. Albert Fink of Nome leads defense. the case arose through conservation agitation and press descriptions of a billion dollar coal steal with indictments dated years ago.
From Juneau and Washington dispatches it appears Major Strong is assured the Alaska governorship with a formal appointment expected this week. Political backers report Cheney’s committee backs Strong, while parcel post changes show minor rate shifts between Iditarod Nome and Iditarod Fairbanks.
