The third annual Ruby Derby run yesterday over a long City course yielded Lamont Minock victory for a purse of 525 with 300 to the winner. George Carl followed with a native team, the event praised for ideal weather and a splendid trail.
San Francisco, March 15. Lincoln Beachey the noted aviator died during a sensational dive in a new monoplane at the exposition. Machinery failed and he plunged three thousand feet into the water where his body was recovered. Beachey, son of San Francisco, had just returned home after breaking world records as a daredevil looper.
Two British and two French warships linger outside the three mile limit awaiting the German auxiliary cruiser Prince Eitel Friedrich which docked for repairs to avoid capture. Meanwhile precautionary measures are being taken after threatening notes to dynamite the cruiser were received, prompting extra security at Newport News.
In New York on March 16 Harry Thaw failed to win release as his writ of habeas corpus was heard. The judge ruled Thaw had never been liberated from Matteawan and he will not be sent back to New Hampshire. On March 18 Thaw’s attorneys filed an appeal to the state supreme court against his removal to the asylum.
Seattle dispatch reports hundreds head toward Seward for Alaska government railroad jobs. Political influence dominates early construction talks. Some expect little progress this season while Jack Dalton predicts starting from Ship Creek toward Matanuska with the line to be built.
Athens reports Turkey renewed her offer to renounce all Egean island claims in favor of Greece if Greece stays neutral. Advices claim Greek families at Ysmari are being massacred by Mussulman soldiers. Former Premier Venizelos urges abandoning neutrality to the new government.
Across March reports crown the Dardanelles fight with British battleship Irresistible sunk by Turkish guns and Ocean lost. Destroyers and chix damaged. Turks push back allied fleets as reinforcement orders and further losses surface.
London reports that the German cruiser Dresden, long watched by British naval authorities in the Pacific and South Atlantic, has been sunk near the Juan Fernandez islands. The Dresden, heavily damaged and aflame, surrendered after a brief engagement with the British cruiser Glasgow aided by auxiliary cruiser Orma and steamship Kent.
London issues orders to block the entire German North Sea coast to curb export and import via Holland and Scandinavia. The measure, effective immediately, aims to seize ships and tighten controls, with anticipation of the first vessel seizure reported soon. Washington vows a strong, sharply worded note to Britain. Diplomatic notes from the United States, Britain, Germany, and France reveal ongoing disagreements over the blockade and protests are expected.

Przemysl forts reportedly fall and Berlin cites threats of reprisals against Russian estates as retaliation measures. Russian raiders reach Prussia borders near the outskirts of Men.
London reports a string of British ships sunk or damaged by German submarines over several days. Sunk vessels include Anna Hartdale Indian City Floridan and more off Scarborough Scilly Isles and Irish coast. U-29 identified as a speedy raider causing widespread disruption in English Channel and St George's channels.
The Iditarod 00 No 10 Pioneers of Alaska met in It City for one of its largest gatherings since founding. They discussed the igloo’s first public function on March 27 and big amusements. New members were admitted and Oscar Anderson became second vice president. A feast followed the meeting, then a social session, ending around 12:30 Friday morning. Seattle passengers aboard the Admiral Watson include W E Donahue August Olson John Kirby and James Kirby bound for Iditarod.
A largely attended Moose lodge meeting in Flat City last Sunday elected officers for the coming term and handled other important matters. Incoming officers will be announced in a later issue. Fresh Olympia Oysters for cocktails, $2 per can. Iditarod Mest Co.
Bangor Mo March 19 Werner Van Horn the German army officer arrested for attempted dynamiting of the International bridge at Vancehorp is charged with illegal transportation of explosives in interstate commerce and has been held for hearing before the federal district court at Boston
Word from Tukoma says Bert Green arrived with his California bride on the 11th. Citizens of the Kuskokwim metropolis gave an old-fashioned charivari. Dr Green spoke joyfully to the revelers. Other speakers followed and the celebration closed with a dance.
London March 17 Edward Gram mons prominent financial writer says the war must end in July through exhaustion of some belligerents. Captains W C Pearson and James Wilson who ran the gasoline launch Beaver on the Iditarod river for five seasons transferred ownership Thursday. Larson and Al Jones Jim McCain a pioneer of Ruby district disavowed that single blessedness and took a life partner. Mrs Frances D Winter to James N McCain wed Seattle Jan 20 1915.
Copenhagen reports a German cruiser Karlsruhe sunk by an on board explosion with about two hundred crew drowned in the incident.
New York reporters state Richard Madden and Gustave Cook were each sentenced to ten months in prison for attempting to obtain an American passport for Richard Stegler. The case involved fraud attempts to secure travel documents.
Seattle March 14 Captain Le Ballister the Yukon river steamboat captain accused of payroll forgery has been admitted to bail of 3000 dollars. Bail furnished he will not proceed North until river navigation opens due to ill health.
American Ambassador James W. Gerard and a party attending a theater event in Berlin were subjected to derisive jibes from the audience. The crowd attacked the United States for allowing arms exports to Great Britain and France, leaving the party greatly annoyed.
London dispatch quotes Lord Kitchener warning that a slaughter of immense scale will unfold with summer. He forecasts Allies peak power by July 1 and Italy Greece Roumania and Bulgaria joining before then. He says Germany’s fate depends on defensive strength and the duration of war remains uncertain.
SEATTLE March 15 Congressman Humphrey returned to Seattle from Washington and said it is likely Congress will reconvene this fall due to the Mexican situation and financial troubles. GENEVA March 16 Italian navy concentration at Taranto reported. PARIS March 18 Germans in Italian territory privately warned to leave.
Unverified reports circulate along the Seward trail of a second death in the same remote region where men were lost in previous winters. A foreign-born laborer claimed his Iditarod journey cost him 40 cents after displaying money in Seward, then was refused aid when repeating the plea of poverty at roadhouses. No confirmation of his fate or identity has emerged.
The annual election for town councilmen and school board members in Iditarod is scheduled for April 6. Voters must register with registration books at Miners and Merchants Bank from March 23 to 21, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. A mass meeting called by Mayor Baker will be held March 29 at 8:30 p.m. in A. B. hall to nominate a ticket. The council currently has five members, seven are to be elected due to vacancies from resignations. Women may vote and must register, as in all Alaska elections.

March 14 Charles Ross, president of the Miners and Merchants Bank of Iditarod, spoke at the Seattle Chamber of Commerce. He said American miners were leaving Alaska in recent years, with work now done by foreigners who have no stake in the territory.

Observations taken at the Budweiser corner of First and Richmond streets at 6 a m each day show readings for March 14 and March 1 with cloudy conditions and temperatures ranging above and below zero.
Beginning Saturday March 20 Mutchler's Stage will depart Iditarod daily at 9 a m and leave Flat City at 3 p m. The new times remain in effect until the tramway begins operating.
