St Michael May 31 Mrs Branfield and Pete Lind residents drowned on a pleasure cruise last Monday when their boat capsized near St Michael. Both were prominent locals and had been enjoying the outing when tragedy struck.
The May 25 issue of Neport News reports the battleship Texas, a dreadnought, was launched yesterday and is described as the largest battleship afloat.
Rutherford New Jersey May 31 report says President Taft was struck in the face by a paper package thrown from the crowd during a speaking engagement. Several foreigners have been arrested in connection with the incident.

The first Seattle to Nome sailing is today as Tanana river rises. The Little Delta departs for Dikeman this afternoon. Launch Nancy Belle arriving from Dikeman at 11 with mail and 12 passengers including dredge men. The Delta is at Dikeman with Reliance expected this morning. In Los Angeles on May 31, thirteen qualified jurors were secured for the Clarence Darrow trial to cover illness. Bert Franklin testified that Darrow gave him money as a bribe.
Ketchikan May 24 Delayed Clement M Summers president of the First National Bank of Juneau waived trial yesterday and was sentenced by Judge Lyons to five years in the penitentiary He served notice of appeal and was released on $10 000 bail
Havana May 25 Officials admit a serious negro revolt has broken out in several provinces. Government troops harry affected districts while a Santiago report says regulars met 5,000 rebels near that city and defeated them.
Las Vegas NM May 31 Jack Johnson arrives and begins training declaring the bout will go 15 rounds. Melbourne May 31 Sam Langford wins an easy decision over Porky Flynn as referee stops fight in 14th. Indianapolis May 31 Packey McFarland defeats Ray Bronson in the tenth, an easy victory.
Jerry Baker, a prospector from the Mud River region, has arrived this week and plans to spend next winter in the area. He has not spoken with the Pioneer, but remarks the country shows promise. Wet ground has limited his early work.
The steamer White Seal lies at Dikeman receiving freight from Iditarod by barge and plans to sail to Fairbanks this evening with 65 tons of machinery and 80 tons of liquor and cigars plus passengers. Regular trips scheduled from Dikeman on the 3rd and 18th and Fairbanks on the 12th and 27th each month with Way stations. The boat has a new dock at Fairbanks in front of the Masonic Temple and aims for prompt, sanitary schedules. May 31. The Daily World suspends after the first week due to lack of support.
