Reports from London and Paris describe heavy artillery along the Belgian coast and around Dunkirk as the German advance and Allied counterattacks unfold. Dispatches note Haig’s troops advancing, renewed German assaults, and scattered prison captures amid ongoing battles across Galicia and the Aisne fronts.
Reports from July describe multiple wartime sinkings: the American steamship Massapequa was torpedoed and sank southwest of Brest with all crew saved. the French steamship Caledonia and an American schooner were sunk with losses and saves noted. three Norwegian victims were reported sunk by German submarines as the war effort continued in the Atlantic and Mediterranean.
President Wilson announced he had taken control of exports and set a policy prioritizing American needs, then allies, and finally neutrals. Diplomats warned that embargoes could starve neutrals and push them toward war.
London reports a major raid on the metropolis with twenty eight men, six women, and three children killed and seventy four men, thirty women, and thirty seven children wounded. British planes countered the raiders. three attackers were shot down in the North Sea, one in flames. Amsterdam notes the entente air fleet bombarded the Krupp works in Essen, killing five men.
Word reached here by Cyril Wood that the steamer Washburn, leaving Holy Cross on Thursday, will be ordered on this trip to meet the Seattle No. 3 via Shageluk slough. It will carry the Cold Storage barge from below Iditarod and take many passengers, altering prior plans.
In New York on July 7 Theodore Roosevelt and Samuel Gompers nearly confronted during Roosevelt's address welcoming the Russian ambassador. Roosevelt accused labor unions of involvement in the East St. Louis riots and struck Gompers's shoulder as a crowd hissed and cheered. Order was restored.
General Hugh L. Scott of the American relief mission arrived from the front and said Russians have begun to fight in earnest with a promising offensive. He noted Russians would likely sustain the drive and that Allied prisoners pale against Russian gains. Belgians on Pacific Coast report Belgians headed toward Portland.
A Seattle man, tormented by fear of blindness and a loss of about a thousand dollars, died by suicide with a noon gunshot. He was a brother of Dick Ryan of Controller Bay fame.
New York and Berhman? Emme Goldmen and her husband Berkman, labeled notorious anarchists, convicted of anti conscription agitation, receive two year sentences. One to serve at Jefferson City and the other at Atlanta.
Washington July 12. President Wilson urges business interests to set aside selfish aims and support the nation as freely as those who serve on battlefields.
United States District Attorney Clay Allen announced that the government will intern German and Austrian nationals and I W W members detained in the state at American Lake.
In Ortland Oregon on July 13 the French government placed an order with Portland yards to construct twenty ships at a cost of four million dollars. The agreement marks a major wartime industrial effort by the Allies and signals intensified shipbuilding activity along the Oregon coast.
Mr and Mrs J G Rivers and their children visit the city and plan to travel Outside on the first boat. Mrs Rivers with two young daughters will go Outside, while Ralph and Victor will ride with their father on Otter Creek. Also traveling are Mr and Mrs E D Carter and Mrs Carter from Otter Creek.
The liquor traffic committee of the Massachusetts constitutional convention voted to report a prohibition amendment. It would make the state become bone dry on May 1 of next year, establishing a statewide ban on alcohol sales from that date.
Court officials plan a Washburn trip to Iditarod to secure connections for Ruby and avoid the limited launch travel between Iditarod and Dike. The group includes Judge Bunnell, Ed Wolcott, Joe Clark, E L Vawter, Pete McMullen, Mr and Mrs Harry Pratt, Mrs Haggren, and Miss Fisher with Henry Roden joining to Ruby.
Edward H R Green son of the late Hetty Green known as the richest woman in the world married Miss Mabel Harlow in New York on July 11. The union links two prominent families and marks a high society wedding in the metropolis.
Senator Ash urst of Arizona was knocked down and rendered unconscious for about thirty minutes when an awning being lowered struck him during an interruption in a public event. He recovered after medical attention and resumed activities the same day.
In Washington the House passed a bill to bar all trading with enemy nations or allies unless licensed by the secretary of commerce. Violations carry up to ten years in prison and a 316,000 fine. The bill also creates a public custodian to manage alien property and allows licenses for foreign patents under payments to the custodian. A test of an invention to propel an airplane without fuel is also urged. A liquor in bond withdrawal amendment to the food bill was reconsidered by the Senate. Final voting on the food control bill and amendments was set for July 21.

The Latouche sailed for St Michael with 750 tons of rails for the government railway to Nenana. The cargo supports construction work on the Nenana line.
Washington July 13 General Parker commanding the Southern Department was ordered by the War Department to maintain law and order in Arizona. The directive underscores federal responsibility during unrest and directs swift action to quell disturbances and protect civilian safety.
New York July 10 The Leonard Kilbane boxing bout has been postponed until July 24 due to disputes over terms.
Yesterday’s river bulletin lists the Reliance at Nulato the Susie at Gibbon and the Tanana at Fairbanks. The Seattle No 3 was expected to leave St Michael yesterday the Sarah was at St Michael. The Washburn left Holy Cross for Dikeman on the 12th.

Otter creek floods enable a strong log supply for Riley's mill. On Wednesday last the sawmill began operations under the supervision of Billy Bristol, marking a productive reopening.

San Francisco July 9. Frank C. Oxman an Oregon cattleman and principal witness against Thomas J. Mooney in the explosion outrage case was arraigned in superior court on a felony charge of subornation of perjury. C. E. Rigall of Graysville Ill testifies that Oxman offered money to induce perjury, claiming he was present in San Francisco on the explosion day.
A principal witness testified that he would be entitled to one fourth of a $17,080 reward for convicting the crime’s perpetrator, highlighting the legal and financial stake in the case.
Washington reports General Chang’s forces besieged in the imperial city and temple with a $100,000 reward offered for his capture. Troops surrendered at the Temple of Heaven after a two hour fight, Chang seeking refuge in the Dutch legation as fighting persisted. Foreigners in Beijing deemed not in danger. Kwo Chang named president of a re established Chinese republic.
London July 13 Great Britain commandeered the entire Norwegian merchant fleet under a coal supply contract after tense negotiations. The move curtails Norwegian shipping while obliging ships to support Britain's wartime coal needs.
Washington July 10 The first deal on citizenship for war service will total 657,000 men with selective drawings tentatively fixed as the date for the drawing. Registrants are to appear before boards for examinations and exemption review while a proclamation drafts the National Guard into the army in August for France. Washington naval and coast artillery units to be called July 25. Porto Rico registers proceeding today as part of the draft process.
A Mare Island navy yard explosion destroyed two stores including sleeping quarters. Eight men are missing and believed dead. Federal investigation opened to determine if espionage caused the blast. Officials reported five killed and thirty one injured in the incident.
Charley Salmi, a night shift worker on the Otter dredge, awoke to a fire in his Discovery cabin Thursday afternoon. He leaped from bed, ignited his hair, and alerted neighbors as volunteers battled the blaze. The cabin interior was gutted, its contents lost, but Salmi survived. The Otter Creek volunteers earned praise for swift, effective response.

Abe Audette receives a letter from Captain Joe Green of Alberta reporting four of Green’s sons enlisted in the war. One son was killed while the other three returned home crippled. Captain Green, a familiar Alaska figure, once commanded river vessels at Dawson and later worked in the Fairbanks district.
