President Taft nominates Mahlon Pitney of New Jersey for associate justice of the U S Supreme Court to succeed the late Judge John M Harlan. Pitney born 1858 admitted to bar 1882 served in Congress 1895 to 1899 and New Jersey Senate 1899 to 1908, now chancellor of New Jersey.
Seattle February 23 Bishop P T Rowe en route north says Congress is earnestly weighing Alaska measures and he believes results will favor the territorial progress. He expresses optimism about federal action aiding Alaska development and growth.
Fairbanks February 23 Abe Spring has sent in his resignation from the Circle City commissionership effective March 1. He was appointed by Judge Overfield about a year ago an appointment cited amid charges against the judge in Fairbanks this winter.
Washington reports President Taft accepted Adjutant General Ainsworths resignation ending court martial proceedings and the House will probe friction between Ainsworth and the Secretary of War with the former summoned to testify.
Fairbanks February 23 Marshal Love has returned to Fairbanks after a trip to California where he served warrants on indicted bankers He says preparations are under way for substantial travel from outside to Alaska next summer and the activity may increase the state’s profile.

Three cheechacooes were conducted over a hard trail by Camp Iditatod No. 27 A. B. last Monday night. Initiates were Ben Brumburg Charles Hanover and John Begora. One became cantankerous over the arduous music. old sour doughs calmed him with effort. a few discolored optics resulted but no bones were broken. More initiates expected next Monday night.
A refined banquet hosted by the Otter Masonic Club at the Merchants cafe in Flat City brought together district Masons including many from Iditarod. The event featured presiding Dr Spaulding as toastmaster, speeches by Henry Roden John Strelic C E Taylor and Thomas McMahon, a piano solo by Miss Taylor, and songs by Miss Coolidge. The Stanley cafe provided a splendid spread and a group photograph was taken of the assemblage.
Name, Feb 23 Charley Jonson won the Solomon derby yesterday in a record time. The 64.72 mile course was completed in 5 hours 46 minutes. Scotty Allen finished second and John Johnson third. The trail was ideal and an immense holiday crowd witnessed the start and finish.
Mayor William A. Gilmore wired the American consul at WindivoStock for icebreaker details. The Pioneers of Alaska held a banquet with 150 attendees. Rumors say Gilmore may seek delegate nomination at the Cordova convention to unite factions.
Private Wondrack of the Sixteenth Infantry at Fort Davis near Nome committed suicide yesterday by shooting himself in the barracks oilroom. An Austrian native, he was described as sober and of good character with no reason given for the act.
A record caravan reached Fairbanks last Sunday, featuring 35 horses and 52 double-enders carrying 30 tons of fresh meat from Chitina. Freight charged 10 cents per pound, well under the usual rates of 25 cents for freight and 55 cents for express.

Houston reports a major blaze in Texas City that wiped out half the principal residence district. The fire left thousands homeless and caused about 7 million dollars in property losses yesterday.
Fairbanks February reports Judge Overfield's candidacy for the delegateship is being mentioned again. It is believed he is pruning himself for the nomination at Cordova.
Cincinnati February 23 The federal grand jury has indicted twenty nine officials of the National Cash Register Company for carrying on an organization in restraint of trade.
Fairbanks reports the Democratic primaries for the district will take place on February 27. The district is allocated 20 delegates.
Washington February 23 Secretary of State Knox leaves today for a tour visiting Central American countries. He will meet with regional leaders to discuss regional security and diplomatic relations.
Los Angeles reports the dynamite case against Maple is dismissed due to insufficient evidence.
The Creek Republicans met last night at Flat City and chose Thomas McMahon and Young Eddie Anderson as delegates to the territorial convention. Delegates were uninstructed. An unrelated ad line mentions H Boas, a clothier.
