Major J Strong of Juneau wins unanimous endorsement for Alaska governorship at Democratic committee meeting in Fairbanks. Efforts to secure his appointment will be presented to the national committee.
Trenton January 31. President Wilson plans a broad tour visiting all overseas dominions if time permits. Alaska visit decided to assess prevailing conditions in the territory. He also contemplates the Philippines trip and has already announced a Panama Canal tour within weeks.
Senator Wesley L Jones of Washington introduces a bill allowing Alaska coal land claimants to appeal patent refusals to federal courts. The Interior Department had issued a coal land patent on Admiralty Island to George Hard. Senator La Follette supports opening the lands and will press the issue for swift action.
Nome January 31 The charge of prizefighting against Gene Rose and Otis Osgood was dismissed after the government failed to prove admission fees or that money changed hands. Osgood won the fourth round in a bout at the Sons of the North hall.
London reports say the allies threaten renewed hostilities if Turkey does not surrender Adrianople within four days. Adrianople has been bombarded and the war pressed to a finish. In Constantinople the Young Turk party gains ascendancy and may seek compromises with the enemy.
Democratic National Committeeman Charles E. Davidson resigned for private reasons. Z. R. Cheney, Juneau lawyer, was elected to succeed him by the territorial committee. Cheney heads to Washington to oppose Taft's Alaska appointments.
Vienna reports widespread press reaction to Italian historian Ferrero predicting dissolution of the Austrian empire. A Balkan federation might lead Slavonia and Croatia to join a larger Slavic empire under Russia, prompting Austria to intervene early in the war.
January 31. Frank Connolly had both hands and feet amputated at the Hospital of the Holy Cross after a fall from a saloon platform onto the ice of the Bering Sea. He was unconscious for two hours before being found and taken to the hospital.
Marshal Powell and five deputies reached Nome with six soldiers accused of outrages on native women at St. Michael. Witnesses both native and white were brought along, and the group arrived yesterday morning alongside the troops.
John Johnson led a team of Siberian wolves to win the Solomon Derby covering 60 miles in six hours. He turned in 2 hours 55 minutes. Badford with Missouri bird dogs finished second Holmson with male mutes finished third and Scotty Alan with McKenzie river huskies finished last.
Bert Kennedy returned to Aniak while Mrs Ramos Peterson suffers rheumatism. Frank Fontas remains lame after an upset near Diskaket en route to Mud River, plans to return to Must as soon as dot jackeam arrives. Mrs Manuel Galarte fully recovers. Fred Willison visits from Cripple, Robert Cockburn back to Dikeman. Rain showers yesterday morning and a 36 degree thaw noted. Judge Ray and others appear in local notes.
Town council approves a 15 day extension to February 15 for the 1 percent tax discounts. Taxes paid before February 15 receive the discount. after February 15 no extension. Personal property taxes due March 1 with distraint if unpaid. realty taxes delinquent March 1 with 10 percent penalty plus 12 percent interest. June 1 triggers lien and attachment.
Nome residents report three native seal hunters blown from an ice-flow during a January storm are likely lost and not expected to return.
The Stilettos beat the ABs 19 to 17 in a rough but entertaining game for the first win of the season. Spectators enjoyed the contest followed by a dance with music by Mrs. Maher and Prof. Hudson.
S J Bakke, Nome postmaster, leaves after naming a manager for Moon Light Water Co a Pioneer Mining subsidiary. Appointment confirmed late summer with commission arriving on last mail. Republican official taking no chances with new administration.
Postmaster Thurston reports the initial portion of blocked railroad mail will reach Iditarod by Thursday or Friday. A 400 pound consignment largely second class will move under special contracts to Nulato with potential extra service linking Nulato to Iditarod as backlog clears.
Camp Flat No 26 A B announced four new members Tom Sandvik Alec Grubas George Vig and Albert Guttenplane joined last Tuesday in a formal initiation ceremony at the camp headquarters.
Judge Lyons commends Barnette for his explanation but finds no proof of malicious intent. The court orders a $1,000 fine without costs and Barnette to be held until the fine is paid.
Geneva reports the famous aviator Bielovuci flew over the highest Alps in a light monoplane in 25 minutes. The crossing was described as extremely hazardous and considered almost beyond belief by expert airmen.
The Haus probe into the Pribilof Island seal investigation has recommended a five year closed season. The report also alleges several U S officials were involved with representatives of interest groups in an attempted fraud related to the inquiry.
Alfred Wirkkala, veteran miner, was crushed by gravel and rocks in a Tenderfoot shaft. He was brought to Fairbanks in critical condition with multiple fractures and facial injuries and may die.
London January 1 After a very short debate the House of Lords rejected the Irish home rule bill. The government may reintroduce it next session possibly after Easter or in the autumn. Conservatives demand Liberal resignations but are unlikely to be granted.
Albany reports a warrant for Maj. Gen. Daniel E. Sickles, 87, for converting over 26000 dollars of Public Monuments Commission funds. A recent judgment of 8200 prompted seizure attempts on war relics before Mrs. Sickles pawned jewels to save them. she and Sickles have been estranged for over two decades.
In Fairbanks on January 31 attorney Louis K. Pratt was fined $150 for contempt by Judge F. E. Fuller after he questioned a court decision in the Pedro vs. Hanot case. Pratt has appealed. The same judge division previously fined him twice, with Taft remitting one fine and Wickersham aiding as acting judge.
