Vienna reports a heavy defeat of Italian forces in the Meletta region with thousands of prisoners and towns seized over two days, while Rome notes Italian withdrawals south of Monte Gegmetto Fora after daylong fighting. Additional artillery duels by the Piave and Tagliamento fronts are cited with German divisions massed near Asiago.
An official statement from London reports British control of Palestine from North Jerusalem to the Mediterranean Sea. It notes Turkish forces advanced today without affecting British positions.
Petrograd reports M Maklankoff Russian ambassador to France dismissed by Bolsheviki over his role in the Inter Allied conference. President Wilson urged immediate war against Austria-Hungary in his annual message to Congress. TheHouse introduced the war resolution and both chambers later voted to declare war, with the President’s signature awaiting to finalize the action. Nearly a million Austrians in the United States were at risk as enemy aliens under the declaration.
Washington December 7 organized opposition to the Presidents plan to take over the railroads for direct operation under his supervision is spreading in many directions with varied arguments and concerns voiced by critics and supporters alike.

Three prominent Germans accused of conspiring to foment a revolution in India pleaded guilty in San Francisco. Lieutenant Wilhelm von Bricken George Rodiek former German consul at Honolulu and H A Schroeder who followed Rodiek as consul admitted guilt. Rodiek’s successor H A Schroeder also pleaded. Robert Gerkie an arrival from Ophir was reported to have slipped away during the week.
News from Halifax reports a massive blast from a munition ship collision in Halifax harbor during a storm. The explosion wrecked half the city and killed hundreds with about a thousand injured. nearby cities dispatch medical aid and supplies as transports in harbor are accounted for.
British aviators have arrived to aid Italians as U.S. transports are damaged on the Italian front. Washington reports no U.S. transports moving forward this afternoon while the navy works to stem the Austro German advance.
In Seattle on December 5, several Austrian sailors remained under surveillance in the wreck cases of the steamships Spokane Maripose and Alki. Carl Wiltsche is in custody again after a prior arrest. Investigators suspect tampering with steering gears. Whiskey smuggling from Alaska, often via fishing vessels, is noted with seizures aboard the steamship Chicago. Captain Helfer of the Saxonia has been arrested after returning from Alaska.
Official dispatches from Rome report fresh Austro German divisions arriving on the Italian lines continuing a buildup from the French and Russian fronts with troops continually dispatched to the sector.
The London press lauds President Wilson after his address before Congress. The Daily News credits his vision for understanding the global situation and suggests Britain France and Italy should have spoken similarly earlier. The Times disagrees with Wilson’s distinction between the German government and people.
The British steamship Apapa was torpedoed yesterday. High people perished. Women and children in open boats were shelled.
Twenty five aeroplanes conducted a raid on England, with six reaching London. Two raiders were shot down and the crews of both machines were taken prisoner.
