The steamship State of California, a Pacific Coast line vessel bound north, struck a sharp rock in Gambier bay this afternoon and sank within three minutes, with the loss of the ship.
Juneau reports the California wreck in Gambier Bay near Juneau results in 28 to 35 deaths with 67 aboard and 28 missing. Seven crew and many passengers identified. Captain Canne and Pilot McClivray perished directing rescue. Pacific Coast Steamship Co. aids survivors. locals offer shelter and work while investigations proceed.
Maury F. Diggs a Sacramento draftsman was found guilty on four counts of violating the white slave law in San Francisco. The jury failed on two charges and Diggs will be sentenced September 2 after posting a $20,000 bond. Co defendant Drew Camenetti will face trial immediately.
In Los Angeles August 22 several wealthy Japanese residents aided by compatriots statewide prepare a case to test the new anti alien land law. Seattle reports Secretary of the Interior Frank Hinie Lane visited last week and spoke at a banquet noting railroads for Alaska and approving a bill to fund 40 million dollars for interior railroad development to open coal fields and drive cultivation of lands.
A group of about seven dogs chased a horse ridden by GR Peek as he neared town. The dogs severely bit the horse, caused it to rear, and then attacked nearby hens, killing several. Neighbors warn the pack is known and may threaten others if not restrained.
In Los Angeles August 20 the 26 round Rivers Cross bout was canceled due to Rivers illness. Cross has signed a new match with Johnny Dun dee for Labor Vancouver. Attorney General Carmody ruled that Lieut Governor Glynn is acting governor and the state senate must act as a court of impeachment on charges against Sulzer. Governor Sulzer remains in office and refuses to relinquish his duties as the dispute moves through state authorities.
Bryant Hahager of Alaska receives elevation to assistant manager of the Pacific Cold Storage Company in Nome. He has supervised Northern business for years and is well known and popular locally for his long service. His friends congratulate him on the honor as directors announce the move.
Report from Nanimo describes orderly conditions at coal mines with soldiers on guard duty through the district. Miners mood is sullen but patrons praise Crosby baths on Caribou Street and the new spring water shower baths as the best ever.
London reports at the foreign office that an assailant attacked the King and Queen of Roumania while they were motoring in the suburbs of Sinaia last evening.
Mert Marston of Riley & Marston returned to the amp after almost a year away. He told the Pioneer that new theaters in which he and other Alaskans are interested will not be built until after the new year, as ground possession cannot be secured until then.
The Hague hosts the twentieth session of the Universal Peace Conference in session on August 22. Delegates gather in the city for discussions on international harmony and disarmament.

News from Mattewan New York reports Harry K Thaw escaped Sunday morning from the Mattewan insane asylum. He fled in a waiting automobile reached the northward road and was carried away. Sherbrooke Quebec police arrested him as an escaped convict and New York officials pursue his return. Mrs Evelyn Thaw hired detectives after learning of the escape and habeas corpus proceedings were postponed to next Wednesday.
President Huerta and U S Ambassador John Lind meet repeatedly but fail to agree on mediation. Huerta rejects American and other powers’ proposals while diplomats in City of Mexico remain puzzled by the stalemate as Congress weighs sending troops to protect American lives and property.
Martin Popich, a Northern pioneer in poor health for a year, left the city for the States seeking medical care to ease long standing stomach troubles. Friends backed his trip with help to replenish his reduced funds and Popich expresses thanks for the community support.
