IEPA data show rising phosphorus and ammonia nitrogen in Lake Michigan shore waters at the 63rd Street Beach. 1975 phosphorus averaged 0.040 mg/L, six times above the 0.007 mg/L standard, with ammonia also about six times the limit. Turbidity and plankton levels rise across Illinois beaches, linked to sewage, industrial, and agricultural inputs.
