Hyde Park YMCA moves into phase one of a plan to boost finances and community service. The board led by John Crewdson outlines a new activity schedule, improved security, and staff reorganization to attract donations and renew youth engagement at 1400 E 53rd.
The 53 Kimbark Plaza Shopping Center begins a October fund raising drive through October 31 to aid Hyde Park Neighborhood Club Hyde Park Kenwood Community Conference Hyde Park Art Center Hyde Park YMCA Operation Breadbasket and The Woodlawn Organization. Donations at Plaza locations will be matched by the Merchant's Association with prizes including a color television set. A drawing on November 1 will select winners announced in the Herald. Participating merchants include Anderson Ace Hardware Breslauer's Gabe's Hyde Park Car Wash Kimbark Plaza Launderette Mitzie's Gift and Flower Shop Mr. G Super Market Nicky's Restaurant Par Rexall Drug Store Public Cleaners and Dr Kurt Rosenbaum Optometrist.
Democratic aligned candidates Odas Nicholson and Attye Belle McGee led in four wards of the 24th Senatorial District but trailed by more than 1,500 votes in the 5th Ward. In the 4th Ward Holman's campaign helped Nicholson and McGee as independents Al Raby and Mike Shakman gained ground. In the 7th Ward turnout was light and independents won narrowly amid limited campaigns by James Rowan.
Neighbors question building permits after a March 9 fire damaged the back porch at 1514 East 53rd. Owner Anthony Kamenjarin rebuilt the porch without displaying a permit. A photo by Nancy Hays shows patched porch supports, a crooked rear upright, and concerns about ice on the stairs. The porch on the adjacent building also appears rebuilt.
Kai Nebel, chairman at 5454 Hyde Park Blvd, says the Hyde Park Kenwood Community Conference marked its 20th anniversary this year but faces severe financial strain. He notes the group has endured nearly two decades and remains vital as it confronts the urban crisis, continuing programs despite hardship.
