Hyde Park Kenwood politicians condemn the sale of the former Fifth Army headquarters site at 1660 East Hyde Park Boulevard. The General Services Administration governs the exchange, drawing sharp criticism from at least three local leaders.
Hyde Park YMCA held its 74th annual meeting at the Windermere Hotel. John Crewdson was reelected chairman. new board members include Esther White, Roger Craig, and Mark MacDougal. A four‑member panel debated Hyde Park Coordinated Youth Program with Abner J. Mikva moderating. opponents included Elihu Blanks and Bruce Sagan.
Harvard-St. George School proposes relocating to the I-11 site at 57th and Stony Island to gain space for 280 to 300 students. Representatives Anne Tyskling and Kenneth Vianello say the move would improve north south access, while the current lot limits play area and expansion.
An early morning fire heavily damaged the University Church of Disciples of Christ at 58th and University and the Blue Gargoyle Coffeehouse, part of the Hyde Park Coordinated Youth Program. Arson suspect John Jones, 21, was charged and held after a preliminary hearing, with case continued to July 2.
