Hyde Park Blight Redevelopment Begins With Demolition

Hyde Park neighborhood project kicks off Tuesday May 10 with the demolition of the frame house at 5456 Blackstone as the SE Chicago Commission marks the first building removal in the Hyde Park Kenwood redevelopment area. The gala meeting at United Church of Hyde Park includes honors for city and university leaders and a public procession to the demolition site led by Chancellor Lawrence Kimpton.

Three Men Indicted in Watsons Jewelry Robbery Case

Cook County grand jury indicted Gerald Smith Eugen French and Lawrence Northrup for the armed robbery of Watsons Jewelry Store at 1200 East 55th Street on April 13. One defendant was also linked to robberies at Model Camera and Tanenbaum Pharmacy on 55th Street last month. Detectives from Burnside district arrested the suspects after a jewelry store owner reported suspicious men in a car.

A University of Chicago committee proposes substantial four and five bedroom houses in Hyde Park under Project A. Designed by Harry Weese, costs range from 27000 to 36000 dollars per unit with private financing options including down payments and 20 year mortgages. The plan would have the university acquire land and rent to purchasers, ensuring an institutional security while avoiding university subsidies.
