Southwest Chicago urban renewal moves ahead with Jack Meltzer 32 set to open an office April 1 in Rosenwald hall. He leads a three year Field Foundation funded plan from 39th to 67th streets Cottage Grove to the Lake under SECC and University of Chicago with a six member advisory board and two assistants. PTA Petition Drive to Prevent Hyde Park School Crisis

Hyde Park area launches petition campaign urging the Chicago Board of Education to approve a new bond issue and a realistic financial plan as class shortages loom in 1960. Six Freed in The Net Tavern Disorder Case

Six men arrested in a raid on The Net tavern at 5218 Lake Park faced disorderly conduct charges that were dismissed in South State Street court last week. One defendant listed as Hyde Park resident was accused of lewd behavior and improper advances. defense witness Dolly Matley, wife of the tavern owner, testified the men were simply drinking.

Children Rally PTA Mobilizes Signatures in 1955

Mothers of Ray school lead a Children’s mobilization for Saturday April 3 at 10 a.m. at Hyde Park Neighborhood club. After the meeting, Ray PTA mothers with adults supervise canvassing door to door for signatures. The Herald reprints a school petition on page 9 and urges readers to sign and mail it. The city has not announced the next regular session to address the crisis.

Hyde Park Ward Clean-Up Demonstration Shows Cooperation

Blackstone residents aided a cleanup along Blackstone avenue from 53rd to 59th street with a street sweeper and 100 percent voluntary car removal. Hyde Park Kenwood leaders and Irving Koppel organized the test with Alderman Merriam’s office backing future ward cleanups.

Northwest Hyde Park residents set April 8 meeting

Residents of northwest Hyde Park will meet Thursday April 8 at Beth Midrash Hogodol Anse Dorom Community House 5333 Greenwood to hear a report from a 15 member committee on Redevelopment Corporation possibilities. The committee headed by Maynard Krueger was appointed after a February mass meeting of 200 residents to report within sixty days. The group studied feasibility of forming a neighborhood redevelopment corporation to prevent deterioration. Residents urged to attend.
