Vigilant push to prosecute Drexel building operators
The Corporation Counsel's Office pled vigorous prosecution of operators of the fire damaged 5101 Drexel building. Alderman Claude Holman will press charges against owner Mae Atkins and manager Thomas White for renting uninhabitable units. A city task force reported more than 34 building violations and Irving Landisman led the enforcement effort with legal partners.

Wright Visits Robie House Prominent Architect Seeks Preservation
Frank Lloyd Wright visited the Robie House in Hyde Park on Monday to assess the 1908 building at 58th and Woodlawn. He urged preservation and proposed a museum or architectural library use, while the Chicago Theological Seminary seeks to demolish for married student residences. The visit was organized by the Committee to Save the Robie House with support from the Wright Foundation and Phi Delta Theta, which offered to exchange buildings and guarantee repairs and open access. Wright, now in his eighties, called the house a cornerstone of American architecture and offered to rehabilitate it for far less than the Seminary estimates.

Fire Deaths Accidental But Procedures Awful Says Jury
A six hour inquest into two deaths in a fire at 6050 Blackstone found the verdict an accident with dreadful procedures. The jury urged stronger city enforcement of housing building and fire codes and to require signs naming inspectors’ agents in all apartments. They also pressed annual survey inspectors to be informed of prior violations and suggested management agents be made direct.
