Anthony L. Turkevich, designer of the alpha scattering device on Surveyor 5, promoted to James Franck Distinguished Service Professor of Chemistry and Enrico Fermi Institute at the University of Chicago Effective immediately Provost John T Wilson announced The move follows his Apollo 11 lunar sample work and his receipt of the Atoms for Peace prize for lunar surface analysis Turkevich helped shape nuclear methods to study the moon and has been a leading Surveyor program investigator He was born in 1916 in New York City and held positions at Dartmouth Princeton Chicago Columbia and Los Alamos before joining Chicago full time in 1946
