Walter Schaible, CIO political action director for the fifth ward, is ousted after Barnet Hodes accused him of backing Leon Despres for alderman. Jerome Wilczewski of local 65 U S Steel Workers fired him amid Steel union plans to back Daley aligned candidates. Dry Forces To Meet Thursday To End Liquor Sales
A fifth ward meeting will organize a campaign to end liquor sales on the south side of 55th street from Woodlawn to Ingleside avenues. The 5500 Woodlawn group sponsors the Hyde Park-Kenwood conference and will meet at Miss Mary Herrick’s home. Spencer Binyon chairs the effort to dry up the area to avert a skid row as urban renewal nears. Liquor spots affected include University tavern at 1130 55th St and Pearl’s 1017 E 55th St and American Package Liquors at 1005 E 55th St.

Vote probe slammed for lax investigation in Ward 5
Louis R. Silverman of the Independent Voters of Illinois blasted the Board of Election Commissioners and Commissioner Sidney Holzman for a cursory inquiry into affidavits alleging vote violations in Ward 5 precincts 20 54 and 56. He urged Judge Otto Kerner to demand hearings and confront witnesses and noted new affidavits were being prepared naming Hodes organization captains Al Prosser and Paul Rasmussen with additional violations in precincts 45 and 50.
