Hyde Park officials approve land disposal plans for Hyde Park Projects A and B after a public hearing. The plan allows bids for redevelopment with a shopping area, high rise buildings, and about 300 row houses while preserving flexibility for substantial changes with city state and federal approvals to follow.
The 30 day jail sentence for Margaret Sharkey was suspended to September 11 after she agreed to stay living at 4820 Kimbark, allow two weeks of showings for buyers, grant city inspectors access, remove all roomers, and attempt to sell the property. Judge Marovitz called it her last chance to redeem herself with the court.
Four University of Chicago students were injured when about 10 youths attacked them on a point over remarks about use by Negroes and Jews. Richard Ward and helpers were assaulted. Swagger and MacDonald were knocked unconscious. Police and officials launched an investigation and promised measures to prevent future violence.
Rabbi M. Berman of Temple Isaiah Israel will retire after his 20th anniversary on November 1 1957 and move to permanent residence in Israel. The temple grants immediate retirement with a life tenure pension as he and his wife plan to join Israel.
