Community hearing on Rosenwald mansion plan in Kenwood
The Chicago Plan Commission will hold a July community hearing on Lou Silverman’s plan to convert the Rosenwald mansion at 4901 S. Ellis into three condos with 12 townhouses on 2.2 acres. KOHC members oppose changes harming Kenwood’s character while some members back modifications. A Planned Unit Development request seeks the required zoning variance.

The Plan Commission and Zoning Board of Appeals granted unconditional backing Thursday for Silverman’s 56 townhouse development at 54th and Hyde Park Blvd. Community concerns over a rear yard setback and wall height were rejected. planning officials will still work informally with the developer on wall height and landscaping.

Florence Goold named editor of the Hyde Park Herald effective with next week’s paper, succeeding Cheryl Fries who departs to become Director of Development at Illinois Central Community Hospital. Goold previously edited the Herald from 1963 to 1966 and won national awards during that period. Fries has led since late 1970 and begins hospital duties on July 11.
