Clean air committee fights city dirt in Chicago
Mrs. Laura Fermi and Mrs. Gilbert White lead the Hyde Park Woodlawn Kenwood Cleaner Air Committee formed in 1959 to combat soot and dust. Central Scientific Company loaned a field test device to detect pollutants. The group tracks smoke violations, seeds vacant lots, educates homeowners, and cites auto exhaust as a growing health threat.
