Gentle white moderates push civil rights response urged
Edwin C. Berry, executive director of the Urban League, criticizes "gentle white moderates" for tolerating a system of brutalization that denies voting, housing, and jobs to Negroes. He urges immediate, nationwide action and cross-racial unity to end segregation and ensure equal opportunity. He notes the shift since Birmingham and calls for leaders responsive to Negroes' needs and a move beyond tokenism.
