He notes the group lacks visible impact and aims to broaden outreach, emphasize code enforcement and rental market concerns, and involve new residents while addressing lakefront issues.
Incumbent U.S. Rep. Ralph Metcalfe and challenger Erwin France traded charges in a heated contest. Metcalfe accused France of being a tool of Mayor Daley over police bias and school funding votes, while France labeled Metcalfe a pup pet of Gov. Dan Walker. Metcalfe cited a federal revenue sharing funds freeze and pledged a bill to redistribute funds more evenly with 95 percent now going to public safety.
Hyde Park Kenwood Community Conference learns from Mayor Daley that public input will precede any South Lake Shore Drive improvements. He notes plans to have Streets Sanitation and Public Works report after fullest study and consideration. Community leaders urge environmental impact data before selecting roadway alternatives.
