Ground was broken last month for a seven room Ray school addition at 56th and Kenwood. The $183000 one story brick wing will add five classrooms two kindergartens to serve 340 pupils and include teacher room office space and rest rooms for the fall term.
A 12 month sweep of Hyde Park progress spans arrests for purse snatchings, library anniversaries, school adoptions, and redevelopment bids. Key notes include SECC and Kenwood planning moves, Park District studies, new leadership at Hyde Park Hebrew Center, and the ongoing 47 acre blight redevelopment effort. Police reports show crime easing. real estate and community groups push expansion and housing initiatives.
Superintendent Benjamin Willis urged the Board of Education to appropriate 850000 for a new 20 room school with an auditorium and gym at 50th to 49th Kenwood strip. If approved and land acquired, occupancy could come in fall 1956.
Illinois State Housing Board will hold public hearings January 7 at 2 p.m. on Hyde Park redevelopment plans between 53rd and 57th streets. The project targets two blighted tracts and seeks federal approval after city backing. In Washington, D. J. Makelmann leads talks with federal housing officials to ensure proper interpretation of the Urban Renewal Act.
The petitions listing candidates for the fourth ward aldermanic race include Graham Cohen of 4990 East End Claude Holman at the Sutherland hotel Curtis Bush of 4745 Champlain Jill R Pryor of 715 East 50th and Heisman Childs of 4160 Drexel.
Irving Koppel, first candidate to announce for fifth ward alderman, withdraws to lead Merriam mayoral campaign and serves as Merriam regional campaign director for wards 4 5 6 and 7. He backs Leon Despres for fifth ward alderman and remains Merriam aligned. Seven candidates six men and one woman have filed for the fifth ward seat: Connor Despres Matchett Morganstern Reuther Unger and Uretz.
Uretz, a lawyer and veteran Democratic precinct captain, opens his campaign office at 1451 E 55th and is described as nonpartisan while likely backed by the fifth ward regulars led by Barnet Hodes. Mrs. Morganstern files for fifth ward alderman race in a seven way contest, supports Mayor Kennelly, and lives at 57 Harper with husband William Morganstern, public relations director.
