Fifth Ward Alderman Leon Despres, hospitalized with leg wounds from a Dec 26 shooting, calls for increased police action to address rising violence in Hyde Park Kenwood. He notes a recent surge in crime and says alienation among the poor may fuel the trend while noting prior declines from stronger police enforcement.
Final architectural plans for Kenwood High School were approved by the Board of Education on Dec. 27 paving the way for bids and construction. The project recalls a 1968 opening plan with four buildings including a two story arts block and a three story academic building linked to a service wing. The new campus will house about 2000 students with 65 teaching stations and a 750 seat auditorium.
Fifth Ward Alderman Leon M. Despres was shot twice near 11:30 p.m. on December 26 at the 1400 block of 55th Street. A witness pointed out the exact spot where he fell in front of a lighted doorway. The area was quiet with few pedestrians and cars, yet street lighting remained bright as officials consider steps to curb rising violence. Proposals include increased police action and patrols, citizen patrols suggested by sociologist Morris Janowitz, and gun registration laws.
Public works chief Milton Pikarsky says work on the 57th Street beach will follow the Johnson Johnson and Roy Jackson Park plan. A permit request to the Army Corps of Engineers seeks to enlarge the beach with landfill and a 30 foot wide concrete promenade from 55th to 59th streets. Plans will be revised to meet final recommendations submitted to the Chicago Plan Commission and City Council. Construction would not delay beach use during extension.
Police detain a 16 to 18 year old suspect in connection with a December 26 incident in Madison Park where a girl was grabbed but not injured. Detectives link him to earlier May and summer incidents involving attempted molestations in the area. victims and witnesses provided descriptions that align, though some charges were not pursued.
