Fire Hit Alport Building in Hyde Park Delays Demolition

A blaze swept through the third to fifth floors of the Alport building at 53rd and Harper around 6 a.m. Monday, injuring none as snowblanketed Hyde Park. The largely vacant structure, under demolition plans for 1970, faces relocation hurdles for residents and ground-floor businesses, potentially accelerating the process if demolition proceeds. The fire ends a long Herald campaign.

Odas Nicholson Elected Con Con Secretary

Odas Nicholson, 44, newly elected delegate from the 24th District to the Constitutional Convention, was chosen as secretary of the convention by its members. A trial attorney for Supreme Life Insurance Co, she is a lifetime NAACP member and active in bar associations, the 5th Ward Democratic organization, Joint Negro Appeal, Community Youth Centers board, and DePaul Law School alumnus.

Mahalia Jackson foundation eyes large housing project split in plan

A representative for Mahalia Jackson, now in Cornell Village, announces a foundation run by Jackson aims to build a 44 to 5 million housing development along 54th between Ingleside and Ellis. The update came at a Community Conservation Council meeting with IHDA notes, Gateway Vistas plans, and concerns from the Drexel Ingleside Ellis residents group.

City union faces cost cuts and site re designation bids

Kearney notes New York projects run about 15 percent cheaper and warns losses could force a reduced floor plan or re design. A decision on whether the union develops the land or forfeits seed money is due by year end or January. An effort to shift site I-11 from institutional to residential aims to unlock Gateways Vistas financing for elderly housing, with Harvard St George and American School as institutional bidders but no concrete plans yet.
