The Illinois Central railroad resumes service cut earlier this year and redesignates 59th street as the main transfer point for its main line trains effective January 1. Rates rise as community groups and Alderman Despres criticize the changes and urge alternatives amid an energy crisis.
For 72 years the South Park Improvement Association has funded private scavengers to keep 55th street to the Midway area free of debris. A 1937 memo outlines its roles in garbage removal, snow work, street cleaning, and coordinating with public services, plus enforcing ordinances and aiding private property upkeep.
WhistleSTOP Community Services launches transfer to Edgewater Community Council to extend safety programs citywide. Jim Kaplan, HPRCC Co-Director, notes volunteers will push new Hyde Park Kenwood safety efforts under Edgewater, with 50 cent whistles sold at multiple local outlets.
The paper announces an early deadline for the December 26 issue. Advertising copy including news photos display and classifieds must reach the office by noon on Thursday December 20 to appear in the paper.
