Santa Claus Opera to be staged by University of Chicago Theater
The University of Chicago Theater will present Santa Claus in five scenes on December 9 and 10 at Leonard Mandel Hall with a pre recital of Dylan Thomas works. Leland Smith authored the score based on ee cummings morality, directed by Martin Phillips. A later section covers a Salvation of Santa by a child, and a street Santa appearance on 55th Street is planned weekly starting December 12, with festival decorations planned along 55th and 53rd Streets. Separately, a judge cleared a filling station project at 55th and Cottage Grove, drawing opposition from Hyde Park Kenwood groups and Alderman Leon Despres amid broader housing-planning concerns.
