Deny Zoning Variation For 53rd St Laundry
Sam Fried sought a zoning variation to extend his Favorite Laundry at 1308 E. 53rd to the alley and add a 67 foot rear extension with a glass front and auto doors. The City Zoning Board of Appeals denied the request saying it would be too heavy for 53rd Street. neighbors split with some objections over light and market value concerns for a nearby apartment building. Fried lamented the decision and planned to rest and forget the matter.

Scholarships To Refugees At University Of Chicago
Chancellor Lawrence A. Kimpton announced ten full tuition scholarships at the University of Chicago for qualified Hungarian refugees arriving after Eisenhower’s directive. The program, starting with the January winter quarter, will cover subsistence by helping find employment and follows a similar Czech refugee aid effort since 1947.
