Leaner bid for state legislature blocked

Marie Leaner of Dorchester failed to have her name on the November ballot for state representative from the 24th District. Officials ruled petitions invalid for two bound piles, and Leaner was ruled ineligible for not meeting a two year residency by three days. She plans to use the effort to build an independent challenge by organizing Fourth Ward voters.

Public Schools Open Sept 4 In Chicago

All Chicago public schools start classes on September 4. Elementary schools offer pre registration on August 27, while high schools register August 28 and 29. New district movers must register before day one. call DE 27800 for district boundary info. Judge keeps Alport case active amid new building violations

The city suit over the 1500 to 1506 E 53rd building was reopened August 21 after a building code inspector cited new violations. Judge Franklin Kral extended the case to include 5237 39 Harper and set a new hearing for 10 a.m. August 28 in Civic Center room 1402. Allen and Louis Alport seek time to fix violations while attorney Sterling Sutton noted gas leaks on the fourth and fifth floors and said emergency actions included hall obstruction and elevator disrepair.
