Local resident Irma Strauss found a 1896 poster by Edward Penfield for Kenwood Country Club's Western Lawn Tennis Tournament. A color copy exists in the Chicago Historical Society with a photo credit to the society.
Tut treasures depart Chicago but exhibit remains. The Oriental Institute hosts a slide lecture titled Tut Revisited at 1155 E 58th St with showings Tuesday through Saturday at 11 00 a m and 2 00 p m and Sundays at 2 00 p m Admission is 1 00 for adults 50 cents for under 16 Groups may reserve by calling 753 2474 The exhibit The Magic of Egyptian Art includes pottery from the embalmers cache of Tutankhamun.
Memorial services for Janet S. Pollak a Hyde Park resident for nearly 50 years will be held at 4 00 pm Sept 14 in Bond Chapel University of Chicago 1025 E 56th St She died Aug 13 at her home 1321 E 56th She was active in 5th Ward politics community affairs wife of late Hyde Park Herald critic and columnist Robert Pollak She authored and edited and served on boards including the American Civil Liberties Union Hyde Park Neighborhood Club Citizens School Committee Public School Arts Society Women’s Board of the University of Chicago and 5th Ward Citizens Committee She ran unsuccessfully for a Democratic National Convention delegate in 1960 Survivors include son Richard and sister Marian Thompson both of New York and sister-in-law Rosalia Isaacs of Hyde Park
A 500000 challenge grant from the Kresge Foundation funds the Chicago field house renovation begun in 1976 with an initial Henry Crown gift. A new upper deck court area will house a varsity court adaptable to three courts or volleyball tennis, plus a six lane track and 90 yard straightaway. Grandstands seat 1500. The grant supports racquetball squash fencing wrestling weight lifting and other facilities in the new first floor. University president John T. Wilson lauded the gift as central to upgrading athletics campus morale.
