An eyewitness account from Hyde Park's Ed notes describes a tense march in Gage Park with Dr. King. The author recalls mob hostility, past brick and bottle attacks, and a Polish boy offering reassurance as crowds gather and chant.
Present residents of the Broadview Hotel at 5640 Hyde Park Blvd were invited to meet Kendall Cady of University Realty Management Co at 4 30 this afternoon to discuss relocation assistance. Hotel managers and public aid agencies were asked to attend along with Alderman Leon Despres and Hyde Park Kenwood Community Conference members. The University of Chicago intends to house first year graduate students and will provide relocation services to current residents.
Dr Curtis Melnick state district 14 superintendent confirms a mobile biology laboratory will be assigned to Kenwood High opening with a ninth grade class. The unit is funded under the ESEA. Elizabeth Mollahan to become principal next week and begin organizing faculty. Lunchroom facilities planned. no students to be sent to Shoesmith School.
The Chicago Park District recommends acquiring PK-2 at 54th Place and PK-6 at 54th Place and Drexel for park use. Approval by the park board is needed. Northwest Hyde Park Recreation Committee and the Hyde Park Kenwood Community Conference arranged for staff to supervise activities at PK-2 from 2 to 5 p.m. weekdays with Richard Moow and Mrs. Pat Taylor leading softball football volleyball and free play for area children.
Community leaders met with Commissioner Sidney Smith to press a strict crackdown on rooming houses violating zoning rules in Hyde Park Kenwood. The commissioner pledged aggressive action by identifying and citing the worst offenders. Edward H. Palmer praised the response as a hopeful step to cure a major community problem.
Assistant Principal Charles McCarthy told the PTA that Hyde Park High School will have about 3500 students this year, down from 4200, due to 550 freshmen going to Kenwood and a shrinking 9th grade cohort. The district plans remodeling, space releases, and possible 24 mobile classrooms, with new curricula in Italian Chinese and expanded humanities, AP and remedial programs, plus staff adjustments.
Theresa Gentry of 1227 E Hyde Park joined 24 other Hyde Park High School students in a Field Museum of Natural History summer science training funded by the National Science Foundation. The dig near Butterfield Creek outside Flossmoor uncovered artifacts from a 1450 to 1650 A D Indian winter camp.
