Judge Says Slum Owner Misled Him In Court

Municipal court Judge Cecil C. Smith said he toured the Park's deluxe ghost slum at 510105 Drexel calling it the worst he's ever seen. He accused owner Mae Atkins of mis leading testimony on June 27 and 28, hinting at possible perjury action. The city seeks 56 violations totaling 3100 in fines and set a 3500 bond for Atkins. Ten firemen were injured in a February 23 explosion earlier.

Hear Case On Slum Property During August

Suits filed seek hearings in Municipal Court on owners of buildings cited by Ramsey Task Force inspectors. Hearings start 9:30 a.m. with locations and dates listed for August including Lake Park, E 47th, Kimbark, Dorchester, Drexel, Blackstone, University, Kenwood, Hyde Park, Drewel, Harper, Lake Park, Cornell and Woodlawn with Judges Cwiklinski Smith Butler Hermes and others.

ACLU Benefit Plans My Fair Lady Chicago Premiere

More than half of the Nov 11 ticket reservations for the ACLU benefit are made. A Benefit Committee for the Illinois Committee coordinates remaining sales. Chicago actors Brian Aherne and Anne Rogers star in My Fair Lady at the Shubert Theater with tickets from $3.50 to $25 at the ACLU office.

First Force Case In Court Again

Thomas Hines, owner of the building at 4717 Drexel, appeared Friday before Smith in the continuing slum crackdown case. Building inspection occurred March 4, suit filed March 25, and Hines was fined 1500 dollars on May 3. A fourth inspection was ordered for July 23 with payment deadline set for Friday.

Show Violations: Receivers Sought for Cornell Building

Superior court suits name Donald H. Capps and Joseph L. Kennedy as defendants in a city action seeking receivers to collect rents and fund health and safety fixes at the four story Cornell building at 5340 Cornell. The 34 units house about 70 people amid alleged code violations including rubbish under porches and garage, missing fire doors, faulty exit signs, unrecharged extinguishers, insufficient desk clerks, and matches stored atop boilers.

Webb Knapp outlines Hyde Park co op design and pricing plan

Webb & Knapp Inc. of New York told Hyde Park cooperative groups it will consider market needs as site plans for projects A and B proceed. Hibbin said a final report on housing units, prices and locations could come by mid September.

Second Street Dance In SWHP August 17

The Southwest Hyde Park Neighborhood Youth Center and its adult affiliate the Southwest Hyde Park Neighborhood Association host their second annual Autumn Street Dance on August 17. From 6 to 11 p.m. in the 5600 block of Drexel Ave professional calypso rumba square and folk dancers perform with a 9 p.m. Miss Southwest Hyde Park and Miss Youth Center crowning.
