Fire Leaves Five Families Homeless on Chicago’s 52nd Street
A fire on March 25 gutted four homes and damaged two more at 837 to 847 East 52nd Street. Alderman Despres had pressed the Buildings Department repeatedly over dangerous conditions including missing bricks, unsafe wiring, peeling paint, and blocked fire hazards. The blaze reportedly started in a second floor walk in closet after a cigarette was dropped in a bathroom near a common hallway. Several residents, including Tyrone and Chester Smith and Leamon McCadd, were displaced. donations of clothing for the affected families are being coordinated by the Hyde Park Kenwood Community Conference.

Marion James a Kenwood High sophomore was shot in the foot around 1 pm Friday near 51st and Dorchester. Two 18 year old suspects Ronald Hiller and James Coleman were charged with aggravated battery. a 14 year old girl companion was also taken into custody. Witnesses said the Disciples gang targeted the crowd as they left Steinway's after lunch. James was treated at Chicago Osteopathic Hospital and released.
