Washington reports Charles Emory Smith of Philadelphia has tendered his resignation as postmaster general, effective early next month, to return to edit the Philadelphia Press. Henry Payne of Wisconsin will become acting postmaster general and is slated for nomination after the holidays.
Senator Platt of New York called at the White House seeking to strike at William Allen White, a longtime personal friend of the president. Word reached Will Johnson that Olabe Duval died in Phoenix Ariz where he had gone for health reasons. Remains to be shipped home likely Monday. A Spanish War veteran, he worked at Irvan Crawford and was a beloved figure in St Joseph. Survived by two brothers Billy of Kansas City Claude of this city and four sisters including Mrs Ken Ringle luo. The Elka lodge will handle funeral arrangements.
Dan Hagarty was arrested by City Marshal Frank Nicholson after reports of severe neglect of nine cattle nine horses and a cow at Second Avenue East. Horses and cattle starved and crowded into a bucked barn. Hagarty faces a 25 dollar fine and potential removal of stock if conditions do not improve by Monday.
Fay Smith fell on slick ice on Main Street while leaving Star Clothiers and sustained serious injury. He could not rise and was carried to his room. Dr. Gage used chloroform for an initial examination and Dr. Klippel assisted. Injury described as painful with possible hip involvement. no confirmed bone fracture yet.
