South Dakota State Fair Dedication and Opening Notes
The State Fair Grounds at the Hu id region were dedicated with Governor Elrod and officials in attendance. James Wilson secretary of agriculture spoke on western development, irrigation, and rotation farming. A large crowd estimated 4,500 to 9,000 attended. races, balloon ascent, and livestock exhibits accompanied the opening ceremonies amid wind damage and extensive preparations for the fair.

State fair crowds set daily attendance record
About 7,500 people paid to enter the state fair, the largest single day turnout in the fair's 21 years. Excursion trains from Watertown Aberdeen Sioux Falls and Yankton brought large crowds, with 1,000 tickets sold west and 1,200 northbound. Races, livestock parades, and side shows drew extensive spectator attention, including a 2:50 trotting race won by Sue Evans and a notable buffalo herd display of Scotty Philip's sixteenth buffalo herd.
