President Wilson faced a joint session to read the note announcing break in relations with Germany and asked authority to use U S armed forces if needed to counter German submarine aggression. The scene mirrored the push to mobilize for potential war.
President Wilson asked Congress to grant authority to use U S forces to protect ships and lives as German submarines threaten the nation. A $100000000 bond issue for war insurance would back merchant shipping, with House and Senate committees prepared to act. Two Americans aboard the Cunard liner Laconia are missing after its sinking near Queenstown. Mrs Foy and daughter are believed drowned, with Mary Hoy and Elizabeth Hoy of Chicago named as likely passengers. U S officials report 267 survivors and indicate the attack violates American rights on a peaceful mission.
British forces advanced two miles along an 11 mile front from Gommcourt north of the Ancre to Guedencourt south of the river. The movement extended the wings in an enveloping push toward Bapaume, placing the center near Warlencourt Lacourt three miles from Bapaume.
Harrisburg report on Mt. Union wreck says freight engine rammed a steel sleeper pushing into a wooden coach. Most occupants of the wooden coach were killed or severely injured with the death toll estimated from fourteen to twenty.
Eight mayoralty candidates will speak at the Commercial club rooms this evening at 8 o'clock. Each candidate will have up to five minutes to outline their stand on municipal questions. The Equal Franchise League of Huntington sent invitations to invite all candidates to discuss issues, with encouragement that both women and men attend to inform voters.
Ten Wells-Fargo Express cars loaded with eggs bound for New York City from Chicago passed Huntington yesterday before dawn. Officials expect eight more trains carrying eggs grain and flour to pass Huntington this week. The train was led by Conductor Gilbert and Engineer Wagner. Erie also ordered fifty empty box cars to be picked up for flour shipment to Minneapolis. Coal storage east of Salamanca has been cleared and normal coal orders are being met.
Mayor Mitchel announced after rioting on the east side resumed and police reserves made several arrests that a bill would be introduced. The report notes continuation on page six.

Six were cabin passengers and twenty were crew members. one casualty unidentified was reported by the Liverpool office. Names and addresses of American passengers include Floyd P. Gibbons of the Chicago Tribune and Mrs. F. E. Harris, wife of Lt. Col. Frank E. F. Harris US coast artillery, among others. crew members were drafted to replace others.
