Indiana Senate amends excise tax bill reducing rates
In Indianapolis on February 23 the senate amended the excise tax bill by cutting rates from twenty five to fifty percent and adding provisions. The house passed the commission manager plan of government bill and the highway commission bill. The highway bill passed 74 to 14 and goes back to the senate. Governor Goodrich signed several bills including abolishing counsel and clerk to the public service commission and authorizing gifts to state parks. The liquor measure to allow brewers and distillers to manufacture after April 2, 1918 was introduced. The senate moved the excise tax bill to engrossment with third reading set for Monday at 2 p.m. The bill excludes foreign insurance companies and building loan associations. assessment limited to twelve percent dividends. utilities tax cut to 0.25 percent. accident and health insurers taxed at 0.25 percent. bank assessments cut to 0.1 percent. a four percent gross income tax amendment was adopted. A misdemeanor for revealing corporation reports was created. a constitutional invalidity safeguard was added. Printing of 1,200 copies of the amended bill was approved. Believe Boy Was Killed Two Arrested In Indiana Case
Connersville Indiana February 23 Mr and Mrs Herman Hilbert were arrested at their home southeast of Orange in connection with the death of their son Russell J Hilbert seven. A chemist found strychnine in the boy’s stomach and the body was buried in Orange cemetery Tuesday. Coroner says tests show poisoning and the death was listed as by strychnine administered with homicidal intent.
