Manchester Print Works Destroyed by Fire
The Manchester Print Works at Smithfield owned by Theodore Schueder was destroyed by fire last evening. The machinery burned completely, but the books and papers were saved in a charred condition. Estimated losses exceed $50,000 for goods and damages, with $100,000 claimed for laws. Insurance on the building and machinery was reported, with goods insured in Providence for $47,100 and in Springfield and Hartford for $21,300. A chemist named Le Maout claimed barometric indicators predict bombardment events, a theory tied to Sevastopol, Alma, and Inkermann battles. The county jail narrowly escaped fire when an insane prisoner caused a stove blaze, injuring nothing but property, though the sheriff suffered water damage.
