Jasper Ind June 20 The County Council of Defense reports National Defense circular urging county wide observance of July 4. A large parade forms 1 PM from the Catholic Church grounds with a county flag dedication and salutes. The day includes readings, banners, and a public address by Hon. Wm Stillwell, with community songs and a war celebration honoring five hundred county servicemen.

The groom, son of Mr and Mrs Chris Geiss, has been a city mail carrier. Best wishes go with the couple to their new home.

First U S Soldier Killed on German Soil Earns Croix de Guerre

Death of Xavier Strohmeyer Civil War veteran
Xavier Strohmeyer citizen and soldier of the Civil War died Wednesday night at his home on North Jackson Street at age 78 years 9 months and 24 days. He was born in Alsace France August 25 1838 and came to the United States in 1841 settling in Harrison County Indiana before moving to Dubois County. He enlisted September 17 1861 in Evansville Indiana served in the 6th Indiana Battery and was discharged September 1864. He married Caroline Hoing January 24 1865 and later Helena Miller November 1875. Surviving children include Mrs J A ONeil Princeton Ind Mrs John Ambs Jasper and several Strohmeyers in Huntingburg Evansville Moline Illinois Louisville Ky and others. He leaves 23 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild plus siblings and many friends. Burial set for 8:00 AM Saturday at St Marys Cemetery with G A R comrades in attendance.

Death of Lieut Roy Schleucher in Chicago
Press clippings from Huntingburg report the suicide of First Lieut Roy E Schleucher of the Government Depot at Jeffersonville. He killed himself with a pistol in an alley in Chicago after being absent without leave for ten days. He left a note to a young woman. He had a wife and two children who are with his father Reverend Herman Schleucher. He once resided in Huntingburg when his father led Emanuel church.

Big victory for Huntingburg attorney in Pike mine case
R W Armstrong of Huntingburg secured a favorable jury verdict for Benjamin Hook, a Pike county miner, in Warrick circuit court at Boonville. Hook sought 38000 damages from Ayrshire Coal Co for injuries suffered December 10, 1915, including skull removal and leg amputation. The jury awarded 20000 to Hook.
