Big Time at Picnic at Davis Park entertains 6000+

The Davis park picnic drew an estimated 6000 attendees the largest ever surpassing the prior 5071 mark. Crowds arrived by horse pulled vehicles and autos while water haulers reported heavy activity. Despite speaker absences Supt Morlan spoke on better schools and local youths showcased basketball and football games.

Picnic Held by Chappaqua Masonic Lodges October 9

The Chappaqua lodge No 121 of the T.O.Q FB and Miana Rebekah lodge No 146 announce their annual picnic in Humeston on Friday October 9 A basket dinner is served at noon with degree work in the evening Local band music will accompany the day Speakers include W. State to mail 125000 renewal notices for 1915 registrations

The state motor vehicle department prepared eight tons of mail totaling 125000 letters to auto mobile and motocycle owners. Notices inform owners to renew registrations for 1915. W S Allen secretary of state arranged early October mailing to have renewals start arriving November 1. This year 108900 autos 7000 motorcycles and 2500 dealers targeted. last year 75000 total.

McAtee Wins Croquet Match in Humeston Showdown

A. T. McAtee, famed local traveling man and baseball enthusiast, defeated Joe Killingsworth in a close and exciting croquet clash at Humeston this week. A large crowd of commercial men and croquet fans enjoyed the contest.

Church Voting Contest Opens at Humes Town Store

H. H. Moore & Co announces a church voting contest in the New Era with $200 in gold to be awarded to a church in Humes Town or vicinity on April 8, 1915. Contest opens Saturday. Autumn stocks featured at the Economy store.

National Prayer Day for Peace Observed Nationwide

The Federal Council of the Churches of Christ in America calls for a day of prayer in response to a request from President Wilson. People are urged to observe the day on Sunday October 4 with morning and evening services, and to hold union services in the evening where possible. Wilson’s proclamation is printed this week.

Odd Fellows Keep Age Limit At Eighteen

The sovereign grand lodge of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows in Atlantic City refused to lower the admission age from eighteen. The proposal was hotly debated and narrowly defeated by vote.

Death of Rev. R. B. Yelland at Espanola funeral held

Funeral services for Rev. Richard Rowett Yelland were conducted at the M E church with Rev. Thompson of Chariton delivering the sermon. Ministers present included W H Shipman J G Duling D J Shenton H E Copeland and E L Stone. Interment was in Humeston cemetery. Yelland, born October 18 1877 in Cornwall England, died September 22 1914 in Espanola New Mexico after gastritis. He served as missionary in New Mexico and earlier in Iowa. married Fannie Evans in 1909 and left a daughter Mary.

Russell Boosters Visit Humes For Farm Festival Ad

About two hundred Russell residents in forty cars took a sociability run to Humes ton yesterday to promote the tenth annual Farm Festival in Russell on October 7. They arrived around noon, enjoyed a basket dinner in the park, and were entertained by a fourteen piece band. Weather was pleasant for the outing.
