Farm fires destroy property near Humeston and Anderson

Nov 21 a large machine shed at James Arndorfer’s north west of Humeston burned destroying three tractors a grain combine a grain truck a planter grinder mixer seed beans and equipment. Firefighters from Humeston and Garden Grove fought the blaze reported noon. A separate small fire early Monday destroyed a combine at Everett Anderson’s farm with gas tank risk and no injury.

Head Start Children Cook and Serve Thanksgiving Dinner

Head Start children prepared a Thanksgiving meal under Linda Mason and Kathy Teel at the Head Start Center. They served the meal at the Community Center on November 20 to 23 attendees including the Beavers Putney Arndorfer Harrah Newton Spensler families and guest Reverend Eldon Ringle.

Anders and Peterson chosen for vacant state Senate seat

Bill Anders a Warren County farmer and John Peterson of Albia were picked in Chariton on Thursday to contest the state Senate seat left open by the death of John Neighbour. The special election is set for December 17 with Peterson the Democratic candidate and Anders the Republican nominee after a four ballot vote.

Legion post honors Clarence Blackman for long service

Clarence Blackman, aged 89, is chosen by the Humeston American Legion post for a special community service award honoring his long service. The announcement cites his work with local bands, especially Des Moines Municipal Band and the Argonne Post band, plus a lifetime of community activity and youth mentorship. The Humeston Commercial Club launches a series of holiday drawings with 3 pm drawings and a Santa visit. Tickets are given with purchases from cooperating merchants. Saturday winners for dressed turkeys include Howard Baker, Kenneth Crew, Amy Reeves, Mark Rickert, David Paugh, Eldon Ringle, Brandon Shultz, Ada Peasley, Ernest Spensler, Gerald Spensler, Sandy Moore, Elsie Upfield, and one unnamed winner.

Stations Rally Support for Camp Courageous Fund

Humeston service stations join Cent-A-Gallon Day on November 27 to raise funds for Camp Courageous of Town Cent-a-Gallon Day at Street Town and Country Richard Oil and Caseys will donate a cent per gallon sold with proceeds aiding the camp serving handicapped children and adults. customers can also contribute in canisters at the stations.
