Lions glaucoma unit to visit Garden Grove Lions Hall
The Lions Mobile Glaucoma screening unit will visit Garden Grove at the Lions Hall on Main Street on December 5 and 6. Tests, by appointment, run 9 am to noon and 1 pm to 5 pm on day one, and 9 am to noon and 1 pm to 3 pm on day two. Tests are free with donations accepted, and blood pressure is measured. Diabetes screening also offered with finger blood test and rapid results.

Ministers discuss rural aid meeting in Humeston
Wayne County ministerial group heard Roz Ostendorf of the Iowa Inter-Church Agency speak on the Iowa Rural Crisis Fund at the Humeston Baptist Educational Building on November 12. She outlined Neighbor Helping Neighbor, the Farm Survival Hotline, and the Farmer Health Project with funds for emergency farmer needs. Wayne County pastors can assist, and contributions may be sent to the Iowa Inter-Church Agency for Peace and Justice in Des Moines. Eighteen attendees included 19 ministers and spouses and one child, with a soup and pie luncheon hosted by Mildred Leech Edna McVey Esther Walters and Virginia Vandell.

Morley Beakler Dies at 49 in Des Moines
Funeral services pending for Morley Eugene Beakler 49 of Des Moines who died after a four year illness following a heart attack. He was a civilian employee of the Iowa Air National Guard, son of Lillie Beakler of Humeston, and husband of Dolores. Survivors include three daughters Sharon Rhonda and Mary all of Des Moines and two sisters Faye Caffrey of Ankeny and Linda Boles of Stover Missouri.

Humeston Commercial Club selected the slogan Humeston the town where a stranger is a friend we havent met from five finalists. Lelia Douglass of Route 2 authored it for lettering outside town. Drawings start Nov 23 with weekly Saturday prizes and a Dec 24 merchandise drawing plus a Santa visit.

Two Candidates Seek GOP Nomination For State Senate Seat
