Vacation Bible School ends with community aid drive

Trinity Bible School and United Methodist Women wrapped Vacation Bible School with a Friday picnic and a Sunday program at Christian United Methodist Church. The weeklong offerings by 25 boys and 21 girls totaled 45 dollars for boys and 41 dollars for girls with weight-based daily winners, raising 148.55 to purchase 1,485 pounds of food for the local VISTA pantry.

Incumbents fall in primary as Bennett plans independent run

Wayne County primary results shake up local leadership with incumbents toppled in both parties. Republican Kenneth Ferguson and Robert Wampler led GOP nominations. Alonzo Essick and Ron Green trailed. Democrats nominated Jerry O'Dell and Charles Overton alongside Harold Bennett who will run as an independent in November. Countywide turnout was about 34 percent with 1,656 voters.

James Joy Wins Humeston Church Scholarship

James Lee Joy of Humeston is named the Humeston Christian United Methodist Memorial Scholarship winner for the 1986-87 academic year, funded by the Humeston church in memory of Lucille Ringle who died in 1985. He will be a third year student at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry this fall.

Suit Seeks 6.9 Million From Wayne County Deputy

Albert Lee Walker of Humeston files a Wayne County district court civil complaint seeking 6.9 million total from Wayne County and ex deputy sheriff Roger Martin over a June 3 1984 shooting during an attempted arrest. Walker asks 1.5 million for physical damages and 1.5 million for punitive damages against Martin and similar amounts from the county. The suit claims excessive force and a history of violent actions by Martin while employed by other agencies. The remaining 900 thousand is sought in favor of Walker and his wife Judith and their four children on multiple charges.

A sequence of community events runs June 11 to June 20 in Humeston and nearby towns. Special council meeting, Pickers music jams, church prayers, senior dinners, driver license exams, varsity games, story hour, and a girls basketball camp taught by Ted Besch run across the period with multiple locations including Humeston Community Center Corydon Chariton Leon Osceola and Seymour.
