History Department Archives Moves to Iowa City Site
Archives department moves from MOVISS to a new facility in Iowa City. The project aims to centralize historical records, improve access for researchers, and enhance preservation workflows with updated climate controls and cataloging systems. Local historians welcome the consolidation and expanded public services.
Sheriff Report Details Local Thefts and Incidents
Wayne County Sheriff’s Department filed a weekly log reporting several incidents from June 1 to June 2. Charles Davis reported theft of tools a 30 ft log chain and diesel valued at 175 from a tractor near New York Cemetery east of Millerton. Danny Goretska said three gates and a large automatic hog waterer disappeared from his Jefferson township farm leased by Olen Edmondson of Clio. Wayne Purdy and Norris Haner reported gates opened cattle out with a missing $600 calf one mile from Russell. Vicki Asmus reported a deer strike on Highway 65 one mile north of Lineville with no vehicle damage.

ISU rate change promises net drop in bills for customers
Iowa Southern Utilities filed with the Iowa Commerce Commission on May 31 seeking a 19.9 percent rate increase to recover costs from an April 1984 contract expiration. Despite the rise, the net effect lowers bills about 0.6 percent across classes. Residential customers would save about 37 cents monthly under permanent rates. interim rates will cut residential bills by about 78 cents or 1.7 percent. Interim rates take effect pending hearings. Also noted, gas rates remain unchanged.

Elderly apartments offered by Humeston Housing Association
The Humeston Housing Association provides 42 one bedroom apartments for seniors with funding from FHA. Eighteen units date from the 1970s as duplexes with shared laundry. 24 four-plexes built in 1978 and 1980 offer two laundry rooms. Rent is 25 percent of adjusted gross income with utility allowances. tenants pay electric heat. Water trash fridge stove and garden space are included. Six vacancies exist in the 1978/80 units. eligibility requires age 62 and income under 20 000.
