Wayne County soil survey reports six soil types and gains
The Bureau of Soils and Iowa Agricultural Experiment Station publish a Wayne County Iowa soil survey with a detailed color map and 24 pages of text. It classifies soils into six types loessial glacial and alluvial and notes crops beef cattle dairying and seed markets while giving climate and farm practices. Copies are free from the USDA.

Snyder Receives Ten Year Sentence for Grand Larceny
Frank Snyder, dubbed the auto bandit, pleaded guilty in district court to grand larceny for stealing a $1800 M. H. Wilson car and after an escape from Seymour on November 21 he was sentenced to ten years hard labor at Anamosa state reformatory. He may gain parole after good behavior, while Sheriff Clayton moved him to the penitentiary.

Humeston stockholders re elected all officers at the annual meeting held last Thursday January 6 with raises for salaried staff. They voted to add 4000 to the surplus fund now 25000 and declared a dividend. The bank will seek Federal Reserve membership to aid local livestock and agriculture. Officers retained: H Williams president C C Hutchinson VP S W Lewis cashier Chas Kelly asst cashier Bertha Dunn bookkeeper. A banquet at Hotel Lee followed.

Obituary: Jane E Schermerhorn Taylor of Derby
Jane Eliza Schermerhorn born April 16 1844 in Bucks County Pennsylvania died January 5 1921 at her Derby home. She moved with her father to Illinois as a child married James C Taylor February 2 1867 and had three children Charles Elmer and Mary. A longtime U S church teacher and Christian, she lived in Lucas County Iowa since 1876 where she remained active until illness. She leaves a husband two children a sister Mary Sehermerhorn and brother in Derby Iowa. Funeral Thursday at the Methodist church with Rev Harwood. Burial at Derby Cemetery.
